With a company history that dates back to the late 90s, 888Sport is an old hand in online sports betting. 888 Sportsbook established itself as a major player on the international stage before entering the US market, bringing with it a wealth of sports betting experience.

Before shutting down operations, 888Sport offered online sports betting in New Jersey and had expansion plans to enter Colorado, Indiana, and Iowa.

888 was slow to expand into new state markets compared to other operators. In an interview with BettingUSA, 888’s Head of Commercial Development, Yaniv Sherman, explained his company prefers to take a “smart and selective” approach to growing its US operations.

For this review, BettingUSA downloaded and used the 888Sport iOS app on an iPhone. We found the app to resemble the website in look and function, with simple navigation menus and intelligent interface design.

For example, 888Sport displayed alternate point spreads and point totals in a unique manner. While other sportsbooks list every possible alternate spread or point total, 888Sport provided simple slides that users could manipulate to change the total. It was an intuitive feature, and saved a lot of space when betting with the app.

In general, the 888Sport betting app interface was straightforward and logically organized. The app provided quick links to popular sports, betting odds for upcoming matches, and an expandable navigation menu.

888Sport In-Play Betting

In-play betting was a strong point for 888Sport. Customers could consistently find multiple in-play betting events open for betting with numerous markets offered.

Market depth during in-play betting events was well above average.

Live stats were hit-and-miss. 888Sport provided live scoring data and virtual game trackers for some games, but not all. Coverage for major North American sports was particularly inconsistent.

Instant Betting: 888Sport offered instant betting markets, which resolved in real-time as the game progressed.

888Sport offered a complete online sports betting experience, and covered a wide range of sports with thousands of daily betting markets.

Bet types included the usual: moneylines, point spreads, and totals plus in-play betting, alternate lines, alternate totals, same-game props, game props, player props, player point and stat totals, part-time results, and more.

International sports also received detailed coverage.

888Sport provided extensive stats and in-game information.

The “all stats” tool opened in a new browser window, which wasn’t ideal when using the app. Bettors could view pregame stats for each team or head-to-head stats for a specific match.

For example, opening the head-to-head stats tool for an upcoming MLB game compared both teams to one another in multiple aspects:

• Their recent win/loss records
• Their win/loss records against one another
• Point totals in their recent meetings
• Their average points per game this season
• And more

One minor issue related to quirks in the way dates and other information was displayed: 888Sport seems to have ported its stats database over from its international betting arm. As a result, the interface displayed dates in the UK format (i.e., displaying April 1^st as 01/04) and uses terms such as “fixtures” that are unfamiliar to us here in the US.

888Sport accepted the most common payment methods used by bettors:

888Sport automatically processed withdrawals back via the same means used to deposit if possible. Users who deposited via options that did not support withdrawals could choose a different method.

Customer support was not a strong point for 888Sport. The 888 website provided a thorough self-help guide, but contact methods were limited and response times were unacceptably slow.

BettingUSA reached out to 888Sport via e-mail by completing a submission form on the “contact us” page. 888Sport responded with an automated e-mail stating it received our question and would respond as quickly as possible. The automated e-mail included several links to related questions on the self-help guide, one of which provided an answer to the question.

BettingUSA received a personal answer from the support team seven calendar days later.

Expert Opinion: Was 888 Sportsbook Legit?

888 Sportsbook was a secure and reputable online sportsbook. The company has decades’ worth of experience and over its many years in operation, 888Sport proved itself to be a safe place to bet online.

888Sport provided excellent coverage of US and international sports with significant market depth, including short-term “instant betting” markets. However, many of its in-play events lacked live stats, and its promotional lineup lacks compared to the competition.

Ultimately, the 888Sport brand did not succeed in the US market.
