Flutter Entertainment recently announced a new spending limit for players 25 years of age or younger in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The betting and gaming operator has instituted this limit within its brands located in the two countries. With the policy, enhanced protections encourage younger players to create sensible budgets for gambling.

The new limit is £500 per month in net deposits. Sky Betting & Gaming, Betfair, and Paddy Power have instituted this new policy.

While the restriction at UK licensed betting sites may be discouraging for some, the goal is to ensure that players are protected and make smart decisions when gambling, avoiding harm. The limit is in place across the board for the 25 and under crowd, but for those who can show they can sustain a higher level of spending, Flutter will make concessions.

Players that fit into this category can request a spending limit increase with the brand. What that entails exactly remains unknown. We do know the player will have to go through a comprehensive process before the operator allows a higher limit.

Flutter added the deposit limit restriction to its Affordability Triple Step, a program that uses real-time data to monitor the behavior and activity of players. The company then uses the data to ensure that each player can remain safe while gambling and enjoy the activity, without overspending.

Flutter UK & Ireland CEO Conor Grant commented on the change, stating the company is constantly looking for new ways to enhance the protections in place for consumers, especially within the younger demographic.

“People under the age of 25 are likely to be experiencing a number of significant life changes, such as gaining independence for the first time and learning how to manage their finances.”

Flutter wants to see the younger crowd learn how to create a sensible spending limit from the beginning of their gambling journey. By creating a habit of intelligent spending early on, players can avoid excessive gambling, which can lead to life-changing losses.

Flutter uses the data it gathers within the gambling industry to decide on changes to its services, including additional player protections. A recent poll commissioned by the company revealed there is support for more protection measures among the younger demographic. Within the 18- to 24-year-old participants, 78% showed support for enhanced protections.

Mr. Grant stated further that Flutter would share the data and ideas they have for consumer protections with the government of the UK and Ireland in the hopes that the information will be beneficial as gambling legislation is under review.

Grant pointed out that the review provides an opportunity to bring the industry’s rules into the digital age and create critical change that will provide even more protection for players.

Over the past few years, several changes have been made in the UK and other international gambling markets to create more protections for players. The focus of regulators has shifted to ensuring gambling harm is minimized as much as possible, hence the deposit limits among the younger bettors at Flutter brands.

In the United States, operators offer customized solutions for players to limit their spending and time spent gambling, even self-exclusion if players so choose. However, there is no set limit on how much a player can deposit. Will Flutter decide to make the same move as in the UK and Ireland and set a limit among its brands in the US?

Currently, Flutter operates FOX Bet, FanDuel, and PokerStars in several US states. The services on offer range from sports betting and poker to casino games. The brands do not limit at this time regarding the amount of cash they can deposit, but will that change in the future?

The problem that Flutter faces should it consider such a limit in the US is rather than being a first-mover, it would likely be an outlier. If it were to enforce such a restriction, it would most likely see players moving from the Flutter-owned platforms to other providers, ones that have not set limits on deposits.

Details of the Spending Limit Restriction
